REGARDING DOYERS STREET Callahan’s Dance Hall Saloon in Manhattan was, in the early 1900s, the worst sort of dive imaginable. Gangster knifing and shooting were commonplace there, in fact, they were almost a part of the nightly entertainment. The actual entertainment was the Yoelson brothers who worked as singing waiters. They brothers would eventually change their name to Jolson and the younger brother, backed by questionable investors, would become a major entertainment star. Callahan’s main competitor a place run by a character Nigger Mike Saulter, a very dark Russian Jew. (Born 868 Died 15, 1922 . Of 3053 Easy Fourth Street in Brighton Beach)
Other neighborhood characters included Sloppy Mary McNusty, Dirty Pat Sweeny and Dippy Rice (A dipper was a pickpocket) shot himself through the head four times here in four failed efforts to kill himself. Oddly enough, there was a saloon a few blocks away called Suicide Hall.
Nigger Mile’s Chatham Club, located at 8 Doyers Street was an enormously popular place that frequented by sports celebrities and was the first cabaret in Chinatown. It was across the street from the Chatham Square Pharmacy where a young druggist named Joe Schenck worked. Schenck would go onto become a founder of Hollywood. One of the first people hired was the entertainer at Nigger Mike’s Chatham club, a young piano player named Izzy Baline who would eventually become Irving Berlin. Nigger Mike died of a heart attack in 1922 while on the boardwalk at Coney Island

Thanks for posting this picture. I love it! Just read Herbert Asbury's "The Gangs of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld". One chapter contains a precise description of Doyers Street in the 19th century, so I had to google it and see what it looks like now.
Thanks again and keep up the good work!
